the coffee table

There is no such thing as a standard coffee table. There is so much choice now that picking the right one for you can be a head spinning prospect. Be it big, small, metal, glass, wooden, high, low, round or square the options are endless. We've put together a list of ten tips to help when buying (or ordering a bespoke) coffee table:

1. Work out an appropriate size. Your table should allow at least 15 inches between the sofa and the coffee table.

2. If you're in doubt, it's often better to have one that's a little too big rather than too small.

3. Coffee tables are quite often around 16 inches high. Decide whether this is the right hight for your room. We wouldn't recommend a table lower than 11 inches.

4. Do you want your table to be hard waring? A wooden or upholstered table will be more durable than a glass top table or one with a delicate surface like a walnut veneer.

5. In a small living room a glass topped coffee table allows the light through and can make the room feel bigger than if you choose a solid one.

6. If your sofa has skirt covers, a coffee table with longer legs will look better.

8. The table should ideally be the same height as the seat of the sofa.

9. Do you want storage in your coffee table? A shelf or small drawer for remotes, magazines etc makes great extra storage.

10. If you have scattered seating around a central area in your living room look for an oval or round coffee table.
